Though I already touched on this subject briefly in response to an analysis by @analyzingadventure (their blog is awesome btw you should check it out) I figured the topic was interesting enough to warrant it’s own post.
Now, obviously Judeo-Christian iconography is fairly prevalent in Digimon, and has been from the beginning, and I think much of it is a case of style over substance, but if you’ll bear with me, I think in the case of Ophanimon Fall Down Mode, given her significance to the upcoming film, it’s worth looking into the symbolism that may or may not be tied to the character.
I had originally begun to glean some similarities between Ophanimon FDM and the Archangel Samael (sometimes spelled Samiel) in this post, but at the time I hadn’t done as much research so I wasn’t aware just how creepily relevant some of these similarities were. A few of them even appear to encompass Hikari herself, but more on that later.
Samael is a complicated figure, appearing throughout many mythological traditions in which he has been depicted as both good and evil, angel and Demon, and is often equated with Satan. His name means ‘’Venom of God’’, and he has been referred to in different texts as ‘’The Blind Angel’’ and ‘’Samael The Wicked’’. His consort is Lilith, the fallen counterpart to Eve, whom, interestingly was the basis for Lilithmon, another of Ophanimon’s darker forms.
The Biblical Samael was, at least in the beginning, among the host of angels who served the devine power. Samael was charged with exacting punishments on behalf of God. This usually involved killing, and so it’s no surprise that Samael would come by the epithet ‘’Angel of Death’’. As such, artistic depictions of Samael have sometimes portrayed him with a scythe.
According to her bio, Ophanimon FDM is a fallen angel driven mad by the injustice she perceives in the world. Wielding her fleming hell scythe, she takes it upon herself to pass judgment upon and destroy any and all things she perceives as evil.
It is notable that Samael later becomes a fallen angel and loses many of his twelve wings. Ophanimon has ten wings, and loses six of them in her Fall Down Mode.
But I digress; where things really get interesting is Samuel’s role in the Gnostic tradition. In Gnosticism, Samael is one of the three names given to Demiurge, which is described as a lion-headed serpent.
I’m not the first person to point this out, but doesn’t the egg which appears during the opening scene of Reunion (when the concept of Demiurge is introduced) look something like Gatomon’s DigiEgg?
The mother of Demiurge was Sophia, who, like all Aeon, was an ‘anthropomorphic emanation of the light of God’. In the Gnostic text ‘Pistis Sophia’, Sophia is cast out of her celestial home and loses her devine light. It is during this dark period that Sophia brings forth the Demiurge.
It’s not too hard to see the parallel there. If Hikari is Sophia, and Ophanimon FDM is Demiurge (AKA Samael) then it is Hikari ‘going dark’ that brings forth this Dark Digivolution.
Frankly a lot of this could be a bunch of creepy coincidences, but I think it’s some pretty interesting stuff to consider in the context of what we know about Tri so far, and whats been hinted for movie 5. But is any of this really relevant? We’ll just have to wait and see.
Okay, so although I her bedroom is shown multiple times during the show, I kinda have a little headcanon for how it is after tai moves out! She continues to sleep on the bottom bunk and has given Gatomon the top, customized to her liking. The room is repainted a light pink, and photographs with her friends and of her digiadventures are all across the walls. (I haven’t detailed this much, I’m sorry!!!)
7. Favorite way to waste time and feelings surrounding wasting time
When she has free time she just enjoys riding her bike, enjoying life’s scenery. But too much free time tends to give her a bit of anxiety, she likes keeping busy.
23. Is there one subject of study that they excel at? Or do they even care about intellectual pursuits at all?
Kari cares a great deal about education! Not just because of it’s importance but also because she enjoys it. Except for Math class. She’s great at English and writing, and was always there for TK when he needed someone to read over his works.
32. Concept of home and family?
Her family life is very important, if not the most important thing for her. She also considers her friends (digimon included) as family. And will do anything and everything to protect them from darkness.
47. How do they express love?
For Kari, it’s always been typically easy to express love in the caring simplistic form of it. But “Love” as in being “In Love” has always been very serious to her. A part of her has always been very excited for it, and another part has always been terrified. One of her fears is having someone tell her they’re in love with her without truly meaning it, and having her end up falling for the person, leading it to end one sided.. with her getting hurt. That’s one of the reasons she admires sincerity in others.
